England are favourites after sweeping the T20s 3-0, winning five of their last six at Chester-le-Street and displaying greater batting depth. Sri Lanka’s away struggles strengthen the hosts’ case.

Key Stats - Brook in Fine Form

  • England’s Harry Brook has scored 74, 114*, 23 & 33 in his last 4 knocks.
  • England’s Joe Root has scores of 66, 24 & 62* in his last 5 innings.
  • England’s Jofra Archer has figures of 3/25, 2/34 & 2/23 in 4 innings.
  • Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis has scored 69, 79 & 50 in his last 5 knocks.
  • Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka has scores of 23, 37 & 36 in his last 4 innings.
  • Sri Lanka’s Dunith Wellalage has taken 5 wickets in his last 4 innings.

England Dominant

England have won the last two ODIs against Sri Lanka after losing the previous two ODIs against them.

England Whitewashed Sri Lanka in T20s

England enter the ODI series full of confidence after completing a commanding 3-0 T20I whitewash over Sri Lanka. Harry Brook’s side dominated the shorter format, and their recent ODI performances have also been encouraging, including a 2-1 home series victory over India.

The return to 50-over cricket should particularly benefit Joe Root, who provides an experienced anchor in an otherwise aggressive batting order. Root has scored 525 ODI runs over the last 12 months at an exceptional average of 105.00. Jos Buttler, Brook and Will Jacks offer considerable attacking firepower, while Jamie Overton and Liam Dawson provide additional depth.

England also possess an imposing bowling attack, with Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson capable of exploiting the early movement at Chester-le-Street. Adil Rashid has taken 11 ODI wickets over the past year and remains a major threat during the middle overs.

The hosts have won five of their last six matches at this venue, adding further confidence ahead of the series opener.

Sri Lanka Searching for Runs

Sri Lanka will welcome the change of format after a disappointing T20I series in which they were comprehensively outplayed. Their recent ODI record offers some encouragement, however, having previously secured a series victory over the West Indies.

Pathum Nissanka remains central to their batting hopes, particularly against England’s new-ball attack. Kusal Mendis has averaged 44.16 in ODIs over the last 12 months, scoring 265 runs, while Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Pavan Rathnayake provide middle-order options.

Sri Lanka will also need greater contributions from their all-rounders, with Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga capable of accelerating the scoring during the latter stages.

The bowling attack faces a considerable challenge on a ground known for high totals. Dushmantha Chameera has taken six ODI wickets over the past year, while Maheesh Theekshana and Hasaranga will be expected to contain England through the middle overs.

With only one victory in their previous five away matches, Sri Lanka must improve significantly to challenge the hosts.

Team News & Predicted Lineups

England welcome Joe Root back into the ODI setup while Jamie Overton has recovered from a thigh injury. Jacob Bethell remains unavailable following knee surgery, with Phil Salt also sidelined by a quadriceps injury. Ben Duckett and Tom Banton provide additional batting options.

Sri Lanka named Kusal Mendis as ODI captain although his availability requires confirmation after a hamstring injury ruled him out of the T20 series. Charith Asalanka provides leadership cover, while Dunith Wellalage and Wanindu Hasaranga offer alternative all-round combinations.

England (possible XI): Harry Brook (c), Jos Buttler, Jamie Overton, Joe Root, Liam Dawson, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Will Jacks, Josh Tongue.

Sri Lanka (possible XI): Kusal Mendis (c), Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis, Pavan Rathnayake, Charith Asalanka, Janith Liyanage, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera, Ashita Fernando.
