NAP Betting Term Meaning
Nap is one of those betting terms that most people have heard of but aren’t completely certain of its meaning. The word ‘nap’ is used to identify a tipster’s best bet of the day.
The one which he/she believes is a dead cert to triumph. It is primarily associated with horse racing, although it can cover any event, sporting and non-sporting, that is open for betting.
The word ‘nap’ originates from the French card game Napoleon. In this game, a ‘nap’ is the best hand you can get. If you’re dealt a nap, you automatically win the hand.
Bettors will often back a tipster’s nap selection when selecting their horse racing bets. While the tipster’s nap is based on their educated knowledge of the event in question, punters must still decide if they agree with it.
There is no such thing as a guaranteed winner in racing or sports, so even nap bets come up short at times. This is an example of how it looks on a typical racecard:

A tipster’s nap selection doesn’t automatically make it the favourite. It’s simply the horse or dog that the tipster thinks has the best chance of winning.
It is also worth noting that two different tipsters could make a different nap selection for the same race. In this case, you’ll need to weigh up your options and make the final decision.
It’s also common that you’ll see the ‘NB’ (next best) selection following the nap. This is the tipsters second favourite pick of the day.
Punters often combine various NAP and NB selections to create combination bets such as Round Robins, Canadians and Lucky 15’s. This increases the likelihood of getting a return on your bet even if a certain tipster’s nap lets you down.
