What is Lithuanian LKL Basketball
The Lithuanian LKL Basketball tournament is the premier professional men’s basketball league in Lithuania. The tournament is played by 12 teams.
The competition follows the format of quadruple round-robin. The regular season which lasts from late September to May will see each club play every other club four times; twice at home and twice away for a total of 44 matches.
Teams receive one point for a win and none for a loss. The teams are then ranked according to the total points they receive with the eight-highest ranked sides playing the playoffs at the end of the season for a chance to be crowned the Lithuanian LKL Basketball champion.
The lowest team in the LKL is relegated to the NKL and the top-ranked side from the NKL is promoted to LKL. The last team to get promoted was in the 2014-15 season and the absence of promotions is because the league requirements were not met.
Since its inception, a total of 28 teams have participated in the Lithuanian LKL Basketball competition. Of these, only two were successful with Zalgiris Kaunas winning the title 23 times and Rytas Vilnius on six occasions.
